  • Do you believe the federal government is doing enough to enforce laws against employing illegal immigrants?
    E-Verify is a good start, but too many companies don't use it. It should be mandatory for any employer hiring more than a few employees.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    I don't want to comment on an issue that is best left to the voters of Arizona.
  • Should the United States have been so quick to drop its support for Hosni Mubarak in 2011, given recent events in Egypt?
    That's a great question. It's hard to speculate on what might have been, but it at time it seemed clear that Mubarak had to go.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    I'm opposed this personally. I think that, you know, different states have different opinions on this matter and it's best left to them to decide on the issue.
  • Is the United States too reliant on fossil fuels for its energy needs?
    Fossil fuels and coal are the backbone of our energy supply. If we got rid of those, what would we have left? We have to be realistic and realize that our options are limited.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    We should keep the tax cuts as is for the foreseeable future. I don't think it's sound economics to rise taxes on this group.
  • We have now had 10 years to analyze the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act. Do you think it is time for a change?
    This idea was a failure from day one. Federal education funds are needed the most in low-income districts which have disproportionately suffered from this legislation.
  • Michigan was one of the hardest hit states in the recent recession. Do you support higher taxes on foreign vehicles while that auto industry regroups in that state?
    I think that's a little extreme. I do support measures to assist displaced workers in Michigan as they seek other jobs and education.
  • Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector?
    I think it's a bad thing that overall government employment has dropped during the recession. This continues to be one the biggest obstacles to a stronger recovery.
  • Should middle school students learn about contraception in health class, or will this simply encourage them to experiment?
    I'm going to defer to local administrators on that question. That's not something the President should be involved with.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
  • What is your opinion on the Occupy Wall Street movement?
    I don't approve of these tactics. These protestors need to grow up and work within the system.
  • What is your opinion on the Tea Party movement?
    Conservatives operate under the "big tent" philosophy. This is just one of many valued groups within the conservative umbrella.
  • Would you advocate cutting Peace Corps funding to help address the deficit?
    This is a valuable component of our international presence. We should maintain the funding we have in place, which is miniscule in proportion to our overall budget.
  • Federal funding for Community Health Centers has more than doubled in the past ten years to over $2 billion annually. Is this an example of out of control government spending?
    Some money for these programs is fine. This particular one is definitely too large and should not continue to increase in size while the rest of our economy is struggling.
  • Would you consider military action in Syria if the impasse between Bashar Assad and the rebels there continues?
    I will do what is necessary to preserve freedom and human rights in Syria. It's impossible to say whether that means committing the U.S. military or not at this point.
  • Mitt Romney was the CEO of Bain Capital for many years. What can you say about his time at that firm?
    I think this just serves to reinforce how detached and out of touch Romney is from the average working American. This is a man who spends more money maintaining a horse than most people earn in an entire year.
  • Many people speculate that the Affordable Health Care Act is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Can you address these concerns?
    If we wanted socialized medicine we would have submitted a socialized medicine bill. I don't think these conspiracy theories are very helpful when it comes to effectively governing a modern, complex society.
  • You have expressed support for increasing taxes on the rich to address our budget shortfall. However, almost half of Americans currently pay no income taxes. Are you sure this is a good idea?
    You're repeating a right-wing talking point. Most lower-earners still pay Social Security taxes, which alone is enough to ensure that their proportional rate of taxation remains fairly high.
  • Elizabeth Warren is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering her a position in your Administration if she falls short there?
    Some her views I think have become, you know, a little extreme perhaps. Ms. Warren has good intentions but I'm not sure that I would go so far as to offer her another position in an Obama Administration.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will give an honest speech about the challenges I was facing in 2009, what I did to address them, what I tried to do that was blocked by Republican obstructionism, and what jobs policies I will continue to push for in my second term.
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?
    It's way too early to speculate on the 2016 election. We need to keep our attention on the here and now.
  • Do FEMA insurance payouts encourage real estate developers to build in disaster prone areas?
    It would be inhumane to suggest that we shouldn't be giving payouts to people who lose everything in a natural disaster.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    I will promise a fresh start in overcoming the gridlock in Washington. In my second term I will reach out to moderates and sensible Republicans to find common, pragmatic solutions to our most pressing issues.
