Answers:
- Would you consider sending troops into Laos, Cambodia, or North Vietnam to more aggressively combat the flow of Communist troops into South Vietnam? We need to pull our forces out of Vietnam as soon as possible. This war is a national disgrace.
- What is your overall position on the Vietnam War?We need to pull our forces out of Vietnam as soon as possible. This war is a national disgrace.
- If elected, what will you do to get the student and Negro riots in this country under control? If we had peace in Vietnam and more investment in education here at home, we wouldn't be having these riots.
- What is your opinion of Lyndon Johnson's new Medicare program?Medicare is only the beginning of what we need to do in this country. I support a national health care system for all Americans.
- Are you satisfied with this nation's economic performance over the previous five years? The worst thing we can do right now is to sabotage the progress we have seen by continuing to squander our money on a war in Vietnam. I support a full employment economy as well -- meaning we must be vigilant against misguided attempts to raise interest rates.
- Are you satisfied with the progress of desegregation in this country since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?Whites and Negroes are naturally unsuited to mix together in society. The entire premise of desegregation is a farce, and my campaign is dedicated to ending this misguided policy.
- With all of the new programs that have implemented over the past five years, do you still believe there is room for the federal government to expand its responsibilities? My God, this is a truly frightening question. Responsibilities of government need to be turned over to the states, and the federal government needs to be drastically reduced in size.
- What is your opinion of the military draft that is currently in place? The draft is evil and should be abolished. We would never need it in the first place if warmongers like Johnson hadn't gotten us into this mess over in Vietnam.
- Would you be willing to place increasing responsibility in the hands of South Vietnam for their own defense? This should be the primary goal of our policy in Vietnam. It's tragic how many American boys have died to defend a country that is not ready to defend itself.
- What is your opinion on the legality of abortion? Would you attempt to legalize or prohibit this practice at the federal level?Abortion is an evil, murderous practice. I will stand firm against any attempts to protect this barbarism at the federal level.
- Did the Supreme Court overstep its bounds in Loving v. Virginia by declaring state miscegenation statutes unconstitutional? My God, someone has to step in and protect good order in this society. This is just another instance of federal judges taking control over an issue that's simply none of their business.
- Do you think the Department of Housing and Urban Development, newly created by Lyndon Johnson, serves a useful purpose in American life?We need to do everything in our power to ensure that our poorest citizens have affordable housing. The HUD department is a centerpiece of this initiative.
- If elected as President, what would you do to lower the inflation rate in this country, which currently stands at over 4%?Right now we have the strongest economy almost in the history of the United States. Unemployment is at 3% and our national output is growing at a furious pace. Compared to this, our 4% inflation rate is a pretty minor concern.
- What is your opinion of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965? Is it a good idea to liberalize our immigration policy and to outlaw national origin quotas? This is a fair and sensible policy that will allow skilled immigrants to enter the United States. It's ludicrous to state that this will somehow compromise our culture and our values.
- What is causing the massive increase of crime in America? How will you reverse the trend? This increase in crime we see is the natural consequence of integration. I will not allow the black community in this country to get fancified notions of what they can get away with when I'm President.
- Do you support the Child Nutrition Act of 1966, which provides free breakfast and milk to qualified schoolchildren of impoverished backgrounds? Or do you believe that the program is too costly and constitutes a misuse of federal power? This is a sensible piece of legislation. I support it and I think that every decent American supports it too.
- Can we all agree that the Black Panthers are a menace to the security of the United States? The Black Panthers are a radical group of militants who are plotting the overthrow of the United States government. It is my firm position, in accordance with the Constitution, that anyone planning treason against our country should be imprisoned and possibly executed.
- Would you consider a constitutional amendment to outlaw the birth control pill, given the Supreme Court's decisions on that issue? The Pill does not augur well for the social health of this nation. If we could get the support I'd love to see an Amendment that settles this issue once and for all.
- Do we need more spending in the War on Poverty, especially in light of the riots since 1965?We are the greatest nation on earth and we cannot rest until every citizen has an opportunity to share in that prosperity.
- On the weekend before the election, Lyndon Johnson's peace negotiations have collapsed with the North Vietnamese. Even worse, there are rumors that a Nixon operative has sabotaged the negotiations. Nixon swears to you on his honor that he is innocent. Will you make this an issue over the last two days of the campaign? This is bordering on treason. The American people deserve to hear about this.
- What will be the overall message of your campaign? You know, beyond the racial thing I do have other policies. I have worked tirelessly in Alabama on behalf of the poor and downtrodden, and I will do the same as President of the United States.
- Will you try to compete with Johnson and Humphrey's machine in Texas?Texas should be fertile ground for the George Wallace message. If Humphrey and Johnson get into a rift, I think we've got a real shot in that state. I will try my best to win it.
- What is more important to you -- competing with Nixon in the border states (to help Humphrey) or winning over Humphrey voters in the northern cities (to help Nixon)?I'm just going to run my campaign and whatever happens between those two will happen.
- Alabama is a right-to-work state. What can you say to factory workers -- who are largely sympathetic on the racial issue -- to assuage their concerns about union rights and wages? This to me is a another state issue. If they have duly won concessions with their employers, I have no right to interfere with that as President.
- If there is no majority in the electoral college, what are your goals at the bargaining table? There's not a dime's worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans. My goal is to win this election outright.
